I was asked the other day what I thought the trends would be in online recruitment during 2010 so I thought I would share them here on my blog.
Online Video
I think 2010 will be a big year for online video. It has never been easier to make a video and upload it, especially with the new range of handheld pocket HD camcorders. You can literally shoot some video, plug it into your computer and upload it straight into YouTube (as I did with this video last year: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hh5atb5a-pM
Whilst videos taken with these types of cameras are not your typical professional, corporate videos, I feel that they will still have a place in recruitment.
Social Media
I think that this could be a key year for social media in recruitment.
There are more and more examples available where companies are using social media successfully and I expect the number of success stories to continue. However, there are still a lot of companies who haven't started to use any form of social media yet as part of their online recruiting activities.
It reminds me of when I first got involved with online recruitment some 10 years ago. Despite the benefits of online recruitment companies still didn't take the plunge straight away and gradually got involved some years later. I have a feeling it will be the same with social media!
Mobile Recruitment
It seems that use of mobile in recruitment has been the "next big thing"for years!
I do feel that specific job related applications for phones (not just the iPhone) will become more popular this year as companies and job boards continue to roll out their own applications.
With the rise in the number of smart enabled phones (where you can access the internet on your mobile) this has meant that web sites can be accessed anytime, anywhere. Also, some phones have the full HTML browser version on the handset now which means you can view web pages as they appear on your laptop or PC which makes it a far more pleasant job hunting experience than before.
So these are my three main predictions for 2010. Please feel free to agree, disagree or comment below.
Happy New Year!
Mike

if the mobile recruitment would become possible, it will really a great help for the commuters looking for job wasting some money and time. Mobile recruitment can also become a great help in a recruitment agencies. They can find and recruit more potential new employees.

Hey Mike –
I definitely agree that all of these mediums will continue to influence the online recruiting space in years to come. Recruitment is becoming more and more personal; individuals are looking for companies that showcase their values through their engaging with potential candidates. Online video is a great way to demonstrate a company’s brand image by highlighting some of its employees, the workplace and the company’s general creative ability. Social media is already becoming a successful force for recruitment, and mobile recruitment is well on its way. Through all of these mediums, we will (hopefully) continue to see companies creating content that draws in candidates and connects with them on personal levels.
Great post!
