Student Minority Admit To Cheating During Recruitment Process

There was an interesting piece of research released in the UK this week by Cubiks (an international HR consultancy) showing that there is a small minority of students who are prepared to use a variety of different cheating methods when going through the recruitment process.

For example, 15% of respondents said they would be prepared to gain an unfair advantage using their CV, 13% using an application form, 11% via an unsupervised ability test and 10% via an unsupervised personality / competency questionnaire.

The research survey captured the views of 500 undergraduates and postgraduates from across the UK and you can see the findings here: http://www.cubiks.com/aspx/content.aspx?sectionid=38&articleid=4884 .

Interestingly, in a separate study of employers (also carried out by Cubiks) they found that 86% of employers think that the CVs and application forms they receive contain lies and exaggerations!

So it looks like even if you don't cheat, the majorty of employers probably think your CV is not 100% accurate?

MySpace.com & Google

Google won an important battle this week for the right to serve web search and advertising listings to the members of MySpace.com and the majority of Fox Interactive Media properties owned by News International.

Google will pay $900 million based on Fox Interactive achieving certain traffic and other commitments. Considering News International only bought MySpace.com last year for $580 million it looks a good deal.

As a Recruiter, if you are looking to recruit school leavers, college or university graduates then some serious thought should be given to using Google to advertise on MySpace.com.

Monster Finally Concedes On Print

Here is the fifth guest entry as part of ongoing "Blog Swap". This weeks entry is from Toby Dayton, President & COO of Jobdig.com. Welcome Toby!

On almost the same day that Career Builder took out a full page ad in the Wall Street Journal (7/31/06) announcing that they had surpassed their #1 competitor in the U.S., Monster announced it had formed an alliance with Philadelphia Media Holdings, owner of the two major daily newspapers in that market.

While much can and should be made of the two developments, I think it’s safe to say that despite the incredible growth, power, and unique attributes of online recruitment advertising, the combination of print and web presents a superior value proposition for employers and job seekers alike.

I would even take it a step further and add radio, television, direct mail, alternative advertising, outdoor advertising, and any other media vehicle that can cost-effectively get an employer’s recruitment message in front of  the targeted demographic.

While daily newspapers have justifiably taken a beating in the past few years, the fact remains that print continues to be a significant component of most people’s media consumption. The two announcements further confirm the fact that as the media and advertising world continues to become increasingly fragmented, companies are going to have to have a presence across the entire media spectrum in order to remain competitive.
